OTTAWA, Canada, July 12, 2023 — Digital Opportunity Trust and the Mastercard Foundation are partnering to support over 300,000 young women and men to gain relevant entrepreneurial skills and foster a network ecosystem of support for young leaders.

The “Going Beyond – Partnering for a Youth-Led Future” project aims to scale DOT’s evidence-based, peer-to-peer model and will be executed in four African countries – Côte d’Ivoire, Malawi, Zambia, and Tanzania. The linkage to DOT’s model ensures comprehensive digital and business skills training, leadership development, coaching, peer-to-peer learning, and networking.

The Going Beyond project will foster a network ecosystem of support for young leaders with the aim of improving their quality of life and building their resilience, agency, and amplifying their voice. Notably, the project will also introduce a leaner, more scalable model for long-term, transformational change by fostering a community of practice among a continuously expanding ecosystem of partners.

Over five years, and with the support of DOT regional hubs in Africa, the Going Beyond project will progressively transfer the responsibility for delivering DOT’s programs and equip youth as leaders of the future through a three-pronged approach:

• Strengthening the capacity of 40 local youth-led and youth-led organizations (YLOs) to deliver high-quality digital livelihoods programming.
• Training and supporting 4,000 young people (Youth Leaders) under the guidance of YLOs as digital business coaches and facilitators to deliver locally appropriate and culturally relevant digital inclusion and enterprise growth programs to their peers.
• Training 300,000 disadvantaged young people with nascent Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in digital and entrepreneurship skills, 70 percent of whom are young women.

Most importantly, the project places young people at the center of the solution, tapping into their creativity, energy, and passion for making a difference; going beyond conventional development practices and extending impact to new countries for both organizations, without the need to establish and operate new offices.

How to stop tilting in poker

One of the concepts that will most help you stop tilt is emotional awareness. If you don’t know how to recognize what you feel, how can you stop feeling it? It is necessary to know ourselves well and know to what extent things affect us.

Changing the focus, taking a break from the game and getting away from the tables are the next steps. Do your part and study where you have failed, improve it and you will see how you come back with renewed energy. You should always focus on the process, not the result, to avoid getting frustrated. The inner healing process that is experienced when suffering a tilt is pure oxygen that will come in handy.

With House Republicans not supporting additional gambling expansion, North Carolina Senate Republicans are playing hardball to get the legalization of commercial casinos and video lottery terminals (VLTs) in the state budget.

A North Carolina legislative source tells PlayUSA that Senate Republicans are “dug in” on including the gambling expansion in the appropriations bill.

The source says Senate leadership is telling House members that without the revenue from commercial casinos and VLTs, lawmakers in both houses won’t get their local spending projects in the budget.

Instead, the Senate would only agree to a basic budget covering state government functions and employee pay raises.

The legislative source expressed hope that House members come around on the gambling expansion and avoid the impasse:

“I do think that by the time this marinates over the weekend with members, this could get back on track and maybe could still be voted on and done by Friday of next week with casinos in it.”

During the regular session, North Carolina lawmakers already legalized sports betting and parimutuel wagering this year. They have been working overtime to finish the state budget, which was due July 1.

House Republican votes not there for casinos, VLTs

Raleigh news station WRAL reported that it obtained an email from House Speaker Tim Moore indicating the lack of Republican support for including the gambling expansion.

Caucus whips ran a vote tally this week. According to WRAL, Moore told his fellow Republicans that the House will not pass a budget that does not have 61 Republican votes.

Moore wrote:

“As you can see, there are not 61 Republicans willing to vote for the budget if it includes gaming.”

There are 72 Republicans in the 120-member House. So Moore seems to indicate that there is support for passage if it includes Democrats. But the House will not move forward on the budget unless it can do so fully on Republican support.

And that’s difficult to do in the Bible Belt state. Some Republican lawmakers have pledged never to vote for gambling expansion for moral reasons. Sports betting would not have passed in the House earlier this year under the same standard.

Gaming expansion has its share of opposition

A group from Rockingham County, one of three counties proposed for commercial casino expansion, took to Raleigh this week to oppose adding casinos.

Casino draft language leaked to the public in July limited commercial casino development to three casinos built by one company with a $1.5 billion investment.

Rather than opening up each casino to a competitive bidding process, requirements seemed to give Baltimore-based casino developer and operator Cordish Cos. a monopoly on North Carolina commercial casinos. That drew opposition from other major casino operators.

Catawba Nation, which operates an Indian casino near Charlotte, also opposes commercial gambling expansion.

Tip #1: Tighten up your preflop game.

Developing a solid preflop game is by far the easiest and fastest way to improve your game. However, while developing solid preflop ranges is relatively easy to do having the discipline to stick to them is difficult.

This is especially true if you play live poker, since the number of hands you play per hour is very low compared to online. A live player can expect to play 20–25 hands per hour, while a multi-tabling online player can play 400–600 hands per hour.

So, when playing live, stay disciplined and use your extra dead time to study your opponents’ games. Pay attention to their tactics and which hands they are showing down. Don’t allow yourself to get impatient and play a hand not worth playing.

Tip #2: Don’t be afraid to pull the trigger with your bluffs.

Too many players don’t have the guts to fire big bluffs, which leaves them exploitable to attentive opponents who will stop paying them off. In turn, they lose a lot of value.

You need be the player who rouses fear and anxiety in your opponents by applying pressure in big pots despite not always having the goods.

Being able to do this effectively will make you a better and more versatile player overall, and will increase your win-rate tremendously.

Of course, against weaker opposition you needn’t bluff as much, since they won’t be as attentive to your strategy, know how to exploit it, or have the discipline to follow through with a counter-strategy. Unless, of course, you’re up against a weak player who folds far too often–the perfect type of player to bluff relentlessly.

Tip #3: Don’t change your bankroll management or study habits when things are going well.

Every professional poker player has a friend who won big money in a large tournament, then proceeded to blow their winnings in cash games or by registering tournaments at stakes way higher than their usual.

It’s important to remember that poker is a game of peaks and troughs. To survive the troughs, you need to act responsibly during the peaks.

That’s not to say you shouldn’t celebrate, or be proud of your success. To the contrary, it’s important to savor the results you work hard to achieve. Just remember that going on a heater doesn’t mean you’ve suddenly become a poker god, and that downswings are inevitable.

Tip #4: Don’t bloat the pot with medium-strength hands.

Medium-strength hands should usually be played passively, since they are rarely the winning hand in big pots. The exception is when they should be played a bit more aggressively to deny equity.

These types of hands tend to play better as bluff-catchers, as they protect the weaker hands in your range–like ace high or weak pairs. This is very helpful because your opponents will not be able to easily bluff you once you check.

And playing these hands passively is another key to a well-rounded playing style. It will give you confidence in having good hands in every scenario, so that you won’t feel the need to make marginal-at-best hero calls with ace-high.

Tip #5: Game select, game select, game select!

You should always put yourself in positions where your edge is the largest. This is why it’s important to leave your ego at the door when playing poker.

It’s much better to be crushing a smaller and/or weaker game than barely beating a larger and/or tougher game. This is not only because it’s more profitable, but because it’s less stressful, and playing against weaker opposition brings lower variance.

Moreover, only barely beating a game might be a sign that you’re not yet ready to be playing there. And it will still be there when you are ready.

Tip #6: Lean towards fast playing your strong hands so you can build the pot and make more money.

It’s a sad sight when a player checks their flopped nut flush three times, and then has to awkwardly table their monster when their opponent checks back the river. Slow playing is a mistake common among players who are afraid of chasing their opponents out of the pot.

In most cases, it’s best to bet your strong hands to build the pot and protect your equity. That’s not to say you should always bet/raise your strong hands. You can check your strong hands if:

• It’s unlikely that you will be outdrawn.
• There aren’t many scare cards to prevent you from getting paid on later streets.
• Your opponent’s range is heavily weighted toward hands with no showdown value.

However, when you feel uncertain, just bet. Yes, it’s disappointing when your opponent folds, but that’s not nearly as disappointing as getting outdrawn or missing out on potential value.

Tip #7: Play poker about twice as often as you study poker, but make sure to study!

Studying is essential to becoming the best poker player you can be, but at the same time, poker is a game that requires practice. Without practice, we can’t apply what we’ve learned off the felt, and we’ll begin to lose our innate sense of the game.

Many of the decisions you make at the poker table are automatic. However, you’ll find that the longer you go without practicing, the less automatic these decisions become. This, of course, only gets worse as the decisions become important. For this reason, it’s necessary to regularly play poker in order to stay sharp.

But it’s very important you set aside time to study. Reading poker articles, playing around with poker tools, and talking over hands with friends are a few of the many ways you can improve your game away from the table.

Tip #8: Do you know definitively whether your river bet is a value bet or bluff? If not, you shouldn’t be betting.

This is a mistake many new players make, but also some more experienced players.

The situation usually plays out as follows. Their opponent checks to them on the river and they have a medium strength hand, so they bet…

…But they weren’t paying close enough attention to how dangerous the board was, or to how the action went on the turn, or to how their opponent plays in general, and so they end up losing when their opponent calls the bet and tables a slightly better hand.

On the river, you should be betting with a polarized range. That is to say, bet with a range that contains both value bets and bluffs, and check everything in between.

You do this because there are no more cards to come after the river, and so there’s no need to protect your equity. Either your hand is the best, or it isn’t. All you have to do is check and showdown with these medium-strength hands and hope to drag the pot.

Tip #9: The earlier the street, the more often you should be bluffing because that’s when the equities run closest.

Poker expert and game theory wizard Matthew Janda says we should bluff the most on the flop, slightly less on the turn, and the least on the river. He provides a mathematical proof for this in his advanced holdem strategy book, Applications of No-Limit Hold’em.

Applications shows that in order to bet with a balanced range (a range composed of the optimal number of value bets and bluffs) on the river, we need to bluff less on each progressive street. This is because our bluffs will have more equity on earlier streets, as well as the opportunity to bluff again on a later street.

Think about it… When you bluff preflop, on the flop, or on the turn, you usually do so with a hand that has potential to improve–like 6♠ 5♠ on J♠ 7♣ 2♠. So, because we have more equity, we can bluff more often while still remaining balanced.

Betting with a balanced range is most important on the river, because that’s when the pot is largest.

Tip #10: Think of the early stages of a tournament like a cash game. Don’t worry about survival and focus on playing solid poker.

There’s a time and a place for stack preservation, and the beginning of a tournament isn’t it. This is one of the most misunderstood aspects of advanced tournament poker strategy.

Consider that in order to finish in the money, you’re going to have to at least double or triple your starting stack (usually more). So, instead of playing defensively, you should be playing solid and aggressive poker early on in order to build up a stack for a deep run.

If you find yourself short-stacked and near the money bubble or a pay jump, then you can start using a more survival-oriented playing style.

Tip #11: Take your time on each decision.

Poker is a complex game. You have to weigh many factors in order to choose the best path of action.

Bet sizing aside, the choices themselves are not many: you only need to choose between checking, calling, betting, raising, or folding. But figuring out which one of these actions wins the most is seldom obvious.

This is why you should always avoid rushing when making a decision. An extra moment’s thought could provide the crucial insight needed to make the right choice, and it’ll help you keep emotions out of your decision making. Do this and you’ll win more, and learn more while playing.

That said, it’s important to avoid all unnecessary tanking. You should never, for example, take 15 seconds to fold your 9s5c preflop from under the gun. Not only will it piss off your fellow players, you will actually hurt your own win-rate by reducing the number of hands played per hour.

Tip #12: Make poker friends.

Building a network of poker playing friends will advance your understanding of the game. You’ll bounce ideas off of each other, and gain new perspectives on every situation.

The problem with going it alone is that you’re more prone to biases. With another 2 or 3 or 4 different poker minds around you, you can more easily find what’s right about your thought processes and thus eliminate most of the bias.

Another benefit of having poker friends comes into play when those inevitable downswings occur. Your friends can provide an amazing source of support during the hard times, and since they are poker players themselves that support will be all the more helpful. But don’t forget to be there for them to and share your quick poker tips.

Tip #13: 3-bet more often.

Most players are too passive preflop. To take advantage of them, you need to 3-bet to build big pots from the get-go with your premium hands, such as QQ+ and AK.

But in order to get paid with them preflop, you also need to add in an appropriate amount of bluffs. Sure, 3-betting only premium hands will work at first, but your opponents will soon catch on and start folding. Bluffs add depth to your preflop strategy, and help you to build more balanced range.

Additionally, many low stakes players are not accustomed to playing versus 3-bets. This inexperience leads to many mistakes on their part, and the benefactor of those mistakes is you–the 3-bettor.

Tip #14: Check more when out of position.

There is no harder spot in poker than playing out of position with a high stack-to-pot ratio. The situation is so complex that even solvers use almost exclusively mixed strategies which are impossible to execute as a human.

One trick to bypass this is to play more defensively and check more of your good-but-not-great hands. This will prevent opponents from stealing pots from you once you check, since you will no longer be check/folding as often. Additionally, those hands that you would typically check/fold, but which still have equity in the pot, will get to realize their equity once your opponents see they cannot bluff you off so easily.

Tip #15: Avoid bluffing on the river with Ace-high when it checks down.

I know you love to bluff when it checks down to the river, and I don’t blame you. It’s such a good spot to fire, since many players clearly signal that they’ve given up and won’t often defend their ranges when they arrive in that situation.

That being said, one of my favorite quick poker tips is that you should remember that Ace-high often still has a decent chance to win the pot even if you check it down. Turning this hand into a bluff in that spot not only opens you up to be exploited by loose calls, it also wins less than checking because you are not actually folding out that many better hands.

What often happens is your opponent holds a worse high-card hand, which you beat, but which you don’t get to see shown down because you’ve bet.

So, next time you get into that spot, just check it down!

That was what the Poker Sports League management promised us this year, and that is exactly what was delivered. This edition of PSL was grand in many ways, and I’d first like to thank everyone who made this event possible.

Nitesh Salvi – founder and CEO of Pocket52, title sponsors of PSL, Pranav Bagai, Siddharth Mishra, and Prajit Gambhir, the three musketeers who started this wonderful concept of PSL and have worked endlessly over the last five years to grow this mind sport!

Prajit, you legend. God only knows how many roles you have at PSL! From being COO to the auctioneer to commentary to ensuring that the show goes on every single time, big shoutout to you, brother, and to Vidur also for making sure every pre-show and every stream was super smooth. Sid and his production team, wow, man, I don’t even know what to say. You guys are so good at what you do! This year the production team of PSL has really outdone themselves. From every reel to every Instagram story to every update, I have to say the content was fabulous.

Obviously couldn’t have done it without your ever-so-talented team! Dashank, Madhur, and Pandey Ji, big shoutout to the three of you for doing such a great job and just being awesome people in general. I’m really fond of the entire PSL team and of course the man himself, the mastermind Pranav Bagai for making this happen on Jio Cinema- working day in and day out to achieve his vision for poker in India.

I want to thank all the owners for supporting this league every single year and spreading their love and passion for poker. This league would not be possible without you!

The Experience

Pocket52 PSL Season 5 was something else only. Everyone together on land in the same resort under the same roof, with no hassle of going onto the ship, everyone bonding and interacting.

Personally, for me, the highlight was interacting with the qualifiers from all teams, it’s really nice to talk with someone when you know they look up to you and whatever you’re saying has an impact on them.

It was really heartwarming to meet the Massani brothers, these boys were the heroes of PSL, and that’s another story to tell. Taking a domestic flight for the first time, these two brothers have come from Bhopal and won all our hearts. What gems of human beings, so much confidence, so much energy, I just loved it, to be honest. I had a great time with all my friends and all the other captains who I’m so close to off the felts!

The competition was heavy, and everyone was so passionate and into it. So yeah, GG to my boys – Dirty (Dhaval Mudgal) and Shardul (Parthasarathi) for also taking podium finishes, I had already told Shardul I was going see him heads up and win this time.

Big shoutout to Gaurav Sood, one of the best poker players in India, for playing the finale like an absolute boss man and ensuring I’m shitting myself on the rails while he’s reducing the chip deficit. Love you, Mozzie unlucky one, and you’ll be back stronger we all know it.

Shoutout to Romit (Advani) and Vaibhav (Sharma) for being fantastic team leaders- you win some, you lose some, and I am sure we will see you guys in the top 3 next season!

Now coming to my team, oh man, I don’t think I’ve ever felt such a sense of comradery and team spirit in my life. PSL adrenaline just hits differently. I’ve played a lot of tournaments in my life and hit a lot of one-outers for big money, but I’ve never jumped the way PSL made me jump and shout and scream, and it’s a different kind of excitement altogether.

Bringing a team format and making an individual sport a team game is honestly a genius concept! I would like to thank my team owners, Mr Puneet Mehra, Mehul Shah, and Rishi, for trusting me to lead this team again despite a not-so-great performance the previous year. Special shoutout to their families as well, Toral ma’am Divyansh and Prerna, for cheering on the Mumbai team and making sure our rail was the loudest and full of energy. Really happy that Mehul and Rishi also came down and really felt it with the team and were involved and there from start to finish.

Speaking about my team, I want to say I’m so proud of you guys – every point earned by each of you was crucial to us winning and reaching the finale. I remember the day we reached Goa and had our first team meeting, I was really impressed with Puneet sir because he gave a really inspirational team talk on Day 1 itself, which had a big impact on our team. I have to say one thing about my team, though, everyone was really into it, The togetherness and team spirit was really evident, and I think from Day 1, we manifested the win when we took that picture near the trophy.

Humaara wildcard kaisa ho, Alok Birewar jaisa ho! I think the best decision I made this PSL, other than my obvious retentions of Akshay Nasa and Honey Bijlani, was to sign Alok as my wildcard. I knew Alok wouldn’t do it for the money; he wanted to play PSL, he loves strategizing, he was railing every table every tournament, his team spirit was unparalleled, and the best in the league, so kudos bro I’m proud of you, and you did a great job.

Akshay Nasa, my player, said I am born ready when I asked him if he was going to play the finale. Our strategy was simple, get 250 BB in the finale, send Nasa, and ship it!! Shoutout to Ankit, our 2nd pro, for a great performance joining Nasa in the finale, and also getting the ever so-crucial points in the live MTT, but also for declaring that we’ve won before the league even started.

Honey Bijjlani, for doing more work than the captain, bhai this team would not have won without you, I openly state that you are going to be retained every year for Mumbai Anchors. Nitin Gulati for his passion for this team, getting merchandise and hoodies made for the entire team, thank you, bhai! Simran Malhotra, my fellow Pocket52 team pro, for never disappointing me, for being the number 1 woman player of the league, and for her spirit and love for the team.

Dhirendra Kumar and Avinash Tauro for being on top of things, speaking to the new boys, railing watching the stream making notes, top top performance guys. “What’s your drink of choice?” A Coca-Cola, according to 43 states. The iconic American soft drink takes the trophy as the nation’s ultimate cinematic beverage.

However, some states couldn’t settle for just a single sip – cough, cough, Arkansas and Montana. Coca-Cola and water tied for Arkansas’ affections, while Coca-Cola and Dr. Pepper were thirsty for Montana’s attention. I guess you get the best of both worlds in these two states? 

Surprisingly for both Delaware and Utah, water is their top movie drink. Whether it’s a health-conscious choice or a speedy solution to wash down their savory or sweet indulgences, they’re keeping it simple.

On the contrary, New Hampshire and Oklahoma are on the soft drink grind: 7UP for New Hampshire and Dr. Pepper for Oklahoma. 

Back to Vermont and its distinctive palette, they voted slushies as their ultimate cinema beverage companion. 

Concession budget: how much Americans spend on refreshments 

It’s no secret that movie concessions can be quite costly with the national average ticket price at $10.53 – so we wanted to discover just how much Americans are willing to spend, on top of their movie tickets. We asked our respondents the following question: “On average, how much do you typically spend on cinema snacks and drinks?” 

The national average expense on cinema concessions stands at $16.43 per person. However, Mississippi spends the most on snacks and drinks, spending about $23.81 a person. Right on its heels, Alabama’s indulgences follow closely behind at an average of $23.53. Finishing off the top three list for top spenders, Wyoming dishes out an average of $20.00 per individual.

Shifting to the other end of the financial spectrum, New Mexico and Utah reign as frugality champions, spending less than $10.00 on movie refreshments. As the runner-up, New Mexico only spends an average of $9.60 per person, while Utah takes the “we have snacks at home” trophy with a mere average expenditure of $8.40 a person.

All in all, it’s safe to say that Americans won’t miss out on a cinematic experience without their favorite treats and beverages even if they’re spending $20+ on refreshments and tickets. Luckily for us, the vast majority of American theaters will partake in National Cinema Day with cheap tickets – aka, more room to splurge on concessions!

In August 2023, we surveyed over 2,000 U.S, residents about their cinema refreshment preferences. The average age of respondents was 40.6 years old. The representative sample comprised of 49.4% female, 48.9% male, 1.1% non-binary, 0.5% transgender, and 0.1% other.

But if you like Airosa (and we do), you have to respect #3 Golden Canary (20-1) at four times the price. Conditioned by Hall of Fame trainer Mark Casse, Golden Canary debuted against Airosa and gamely chased the winner every step of the way to finish second. Golden Canary was never more than three lengths behind (noteworthy since Airosa’s quick pace strung the field out over nearly 16 lengths after half a mile), and Golden Canary actually gained a length on Airosa through the final furlong.

That was a deceptively good try from Golden Canary, who has worked well since then. If she moves forward at all in her second start, Golden Canary can vie for victory at a big price. The fact she’ll be ridden by jockey Sahin Civaci (a 30% winner teaming up with Casse over the last two months) adds to the appeal.

Bonus carryover: $2,137 Super High 5 at Ellis Park (12:45 p.m. ET)

No one hit the $1 Super High 5 in the final race on Saturday at Ellis Park, which means there’s a $2,137 non-jackpot carryover up for grabs in Sunday’s opening race.

Race 1 is a $50,000 maiden claimer for two-year-old fillies sprinting 5 1/2 furlongs on turf. Sweet Guitar has put together a decent work tab and will be ridden by Joe Talamo (a 33% winner teaming up with McKeever over the past two months), so we recommend keying Sweet Guitar on top in the Super High 5.

A host of real-money gambling and gaming businesses have formed the Global Gaming Alliance, a new forum that aims to address shared challenges as the market for real-money, free-to-play and console gaming evolves. 

The GGA brings together real-money operators Entain and DraftKings, Facebook parent Meta, and mobile games developers 89Trillion and Habby to create a fair and sustainable industry. 

The collective has published a white paper, Responsible Gaming is Everyone’s Business, which calls on gaming companies to follow best practices on issues such as diversity, transparency, and player protection. In particular, the white paper highlights a need for greater diversity, more accessible and relatable games for a wider range of players, and controls to ensure play remains sustainable. 

The initiative launches with the gaming sector booming. Quoting third-party figures, the white paper points out that there were an estimated 2.9 billion players worldwide at the end of last year. Revenue for the sector is forecast to surpass $200bn (£148bn/€175bn) by 2023.

Euro 2024 will be held in Germany from June 14 to July 14, 2024. We’re in the early stages of qualifications with no more than two games being played per side.

In total 24 will participate in the tournament, and 23 of those sides will come through the qualification process. As hosts, Germany automatically qualifies.

Why Is France Favored to Win Euro 2024?

On an international level, the French are the second-best side. Les Bleus were runners-up at the 2022 World Cup. On that World Cup journey in Qatar, France took out some strong European opponents.

They bested Denmark 2-1 in the group stage (the Danish hold the ninth-best Euro odds), Poland in the Round of 16 by a score of 3-1 (Poland is at +5000 for Euro 2024) and then France dispatched the English 2-1 in the Quarter-Finals (England is third on Euro odds board).

Through the short qualification period, France is 2-0-0 with a +5 goal differential while keeping two clean sheets with wins over Ireland and the Netherlands. 

Star power is another big factor to consider, and the Bleu-Blanc-Rouge have the biggest star of them all in Kylian Mbappe. The PSG forward has no flaws in his game and dominates at every level.

In Qatar, Mbappe scored the most goals (8), lead the tournament in goal-creating actions with 11 (five more than the next best-player) and was third for goal-creating actions per 90 (1.74). When it comes to unlocking a game there’s no better player in Europe or even the world than Mbappe.

Euro 2024 Value 

France enters the tournament as slight favorites, what sides have greater value and have a chance to win instead of the favorites?

Germany

The hosts are just behind France on the oddsboard at +550. Because of their host status, we don’t have any sense of the form their in. They haven’t played any games because they don’t need to qualify.

If not for a shock 2-1 loss to Japan in the group stage of the 2022 World Cup, Germany would have likely gone much further. They bounced back from that defeat to the Blue Samurai with a 1-1 draw with a strong Spanish side before dismantling Costa Rica 4-2 to close out their tournament. 

The Germans will hope that youngster Jamal Musiala builds off a strong World Cup where he was credited with 7.67 shot-creating actions per 90 and an even better 22-23 Bundesliga campaign where he scored 12 goals and had ten assists for Bayern in his 19-year-old season. The kid is only going to get much better.

England

The English are the top-ranked side in Group C of Euro qualifiers with wins over Ukraine (2-0) and Italy (2-1).

Gareth Southgate’s side is winning games they should (against Ukraine) and those where they’re second best (vs Italy). Against the Azzurri, England only had 42% of the possession and 42% of the shots, they even went down a man in the 80th minute thanks to a Luke Shaw red card and still won 2-1. 

With Southgate’s contract over in December of 2024, this will likely be his final major tournament. His sides have come close to glory a few times but never won a title. Sadly for the three lions, their returns have been diminishing for the last few years.

2024 Euro Dark horse

Every Euro tournament has its dark horse. A team comes out of nowhere and makes a deep run and upsets the landscape. 

In 2020, that was the Swiss who finished third in Group A and made it to the Quarter-Finals after beating France in the Round of 16.

Who should you have your eyes on in 2024?

Netherlands

The Dutch are no strangers to this competition. They won it once in 1988 and placed third four times. That last third-place finish came in 2004. 

At the 2022 World Cup, the Flying Dutchmen finished fourth with the third youngest squad in the competition. They had an average age of 26. Forward Cody Gakpo was a revelation with three goals in five matches for the Oranje in Qatar.

Croatia

The Croatians are at the top of Group D with four points in two qualifiers. Remember, they finished as runners-up at the 2018 World Cup and then third in Qatar. Card values in live blackjack

The values of cards in a game of blackjack are easy to follow. They correspond to their numerical value displayed on the card. Face cards (Jack, Queen and King) are worth ten, while an Ace can be worth either one or 11 and played however you see fit.

In-play actions available in live blackjack

Hit

By ‘hitting’, you’re requesting an additional card from the dealer to try and improve your hand(s). You can continue to hit cards until your hand value is 21 or greater.

Stand

You can choose to stand on your hand, which means that you are happy with the value of your cards and don’t require any more from the deck. You may choose to stand your hand to avoid exceeding 21 and going bust.

Split

When a dealer gives you two cards of equal value, you can split them. Splitting turns these cards into two separate hands, with the dealer giving you one additional card for each hand. You must pay to split. The additional bet must be equal to your starting stake.

Double Down

If you believe one additional card will improve your hand to defeat the dealer, you may choose to double down. You’ll only get one more card from the deck and you must double your starting stake.

Insurance

Whenever the dealer’s upcard is an Ace, the dealer will offer you an insurance side bet which can cover your losses if the dealer has a blackjack.

How many hands can you play in live blackjack?

You can play as many hands as you want at most live blackjack tables. Wherever there is a vacant seat at the table, you can normally use it to play multiple hands in different seats – providing you have the bankroll for it. Unlike other card games such as Texas Hold’em Poker, where it’s not possible to take up multiple seats at a table, you can do so in blackjack because you are not playing against the other players at the table, only the dealer’s hand.

What does bet behind mean?

At some live casino blackjack tables, you may have the option to ‘bet behind’ another active player at the table. This means that you will be betting on your chosen player’s hand to beat the dealer’s hand. Although you will have no say or control over how the hand turns out, you obviously have a choice as to which player you choose to bet behind.

Each active player at the table will have icons displayed next to their name, displaying how well they are playing. Those on a ‘hot’ or winning streak will usually have a gold medal or star next to their name.

How does the dealer play their hand?

You should now know how to play your blackjack hand at the tables, but do you know how the dealer plays their own hand? Put simply, if the dealer’s first two cards add up to 16 or less, they must hit and take an additional card. If their first two cards value is between 18 and 21, they must stand and take no further cards.

If the dealer has a ‘hard’ 17, they must stand. A hard 17 is a hand that does not contain an ace or has one or more aces with the value at one. If the dealer has a ‘soft’ 17, they must hit and take an additional card. A soft 17 is a hand that does contain an ace with the value being at 11.

The dealer’s hand automatically wins the round if your hand busts, or if the option is available to surrender your hand and half of your original stake. Their hand also wins if it is closer to 21 than yours. If you and the dealer have hands of the same value, then this is a ‘push’. In this event, you receive your original stake in full due to the tied game.

It’s worth noting that the dealer has very little say in how they play their hand. They must adhere to the house rules of standing on hard 17 and hitting on soft 17. Under no circumstances can they change tac and play their hand differently.

Available payouts at the blackjack tables

First and foremost, if you win a hand of live blackjack against the dealer’s hand, you will win a payout worth 1:1. If you bet €10, you’ll receive €10 in winnings, plus your €10 stake back.

It’s a little less straightforward for blackjacks. Some tables payout 6:5 for blackjack, while others will pay 3:2. For example, if you bet €10 and get a blackjack at a 6:5 blackjack table, you’ll receive €12 in winnings, plus your €10 stake back. If you bet €10 and get a blackjack at a 3:2 blackjack table, you’ll get €15 in winnings, plus your €10 stake back.

If you choose to take out the insurance bet, this pays out at 2:1 in the event the dealer lands a natural two-card blackjack.

Side bets in live blackjack

Although bet behind is also considered a side bet option, there are two primary side bets that you can place when sat at most of our live blackjack tables:

• 21+3
  Let’s start with the 21+3 side bet. This one happens around the first two cards you receive, as well as the dealer’s visible ‘upcard’. If you can form a three-card poker hand using your first two cards and the dealer’s upcard (flush, straight, straight flush or three-of-a-kind) you will win a payout. The size of the payout depends on what kind of poker hand you can form. It typically ranges from 5:1 for a flush through to 100:1 for three-of-a-kind cards of the same suit.
   
• Perfect Pairs
  Perfect Pairs is the second most popular side bet you’ll find at our live blackjack tables. This optional side bet requires you to find matching card values, card colours or, better still, two identical cards. You can win 5:1 for a Mixed Pair, such as a pair of eights of different suits. You can win 12:1 for a Coloured Pair, like a pair of sixes of the same colour i.e. diamonds or hearts. Finally, you can also bag 25:1 payouts for a Perfect Pair, which is two identical cards.

Understanding optimal strategy in live blackjack

The key to giving yourself the best chance of winning at the live casino blackjack tables is to adopt a smart strategy. A smart strategy is one that minimises the game’s house edge. With that in mind, let’s take a look at some of the betting techniques you should employ as part of an optimal blackjack strategy:

• Doubling down on 10 and 11
  Some casinos will only allow players to double down on hands when their initial two-card hand is worth 10 or 11. Doubling down on 10 or 11 is a powerful play, particularly if the dealer’s hand is lower. It may even be prudent to double down when your hand is worth nine and the dealer’s hand is of a lower value still.
   
• Splitting Aces and 8s
  If you have a pair of aces in your hand, this is a hard or soft total of 12. This is rarely a good situation to be in. There’s a high probability of landing a face card or a ten with your next card and going bust. Splitting them gives you a chance to potentially land two blackjacks or two cards valued higher than 12.

  A pair of eights is a hard total of 16, which means there are plenty of cards in the deck that could bust your hand when you hit. Splitting your eights into two hands gives you a chance to land a ten on both hands to achieve 18, which is a respectable outcome in this scenario.
   

• Avoid taking Insurance
  Whenever the dealer’s upcard is an ace, you will get the chance to buy ‘Insurance’. This requires you to pay half the size of your original stake as a side bet, which pays out 2:1 if the dealer has a blackjack, ensuring you break even for the hand. The dealer will not have a blackjack more than 50% of the time, so Insurance is a statistically bad play – unless you are certain their next card will be a ten.
   
• Surrender 16 against a ten (if allowed)
  If early or late ‘Surrender’, the best time to use it is when you have a hand value of 16 against the dealer’s ten. There are plenty of cards in the deck that can bust your hand and a similar amount that can give the dealer’s hand an unassailable advantage. That’s why it makes more sense to cut your losses and surrender half your stake in this position.

World of Warcraft is home to many, many classes, one of which is the Hunter, a formidable DPS-inclined support type that’s genetically engineered for the likes of ranged combat and beast mastery. As far as starting class types go, it’s certainly one of the better choices, as it not only offers a wide selection of armors and weaponry to choose from, but even a second line of defense — a pet, of all things, that can wage war in your favor and clean the battlefield for all the while you pick your shots and remain mostly unscathed.

Anyway, if you have decided to roll the dice and pursue the Hunter class, then be sure to read on for a few beginner tips. Here’s everything you need to know about making a dent in Azeroth as an up-and-coming survivalist with an itchy quiver finger.

5. Your Pet Is Your Second Half

Once you’ve successfully managed to brush through the introductory quests and complete your initial training zones, you’ll have the opportunity to tame your very first pet, which will come as part of a specialized class quest at level 10. It’s worth pointing out here that, depending on the area you’re in and the race you’ve chosen, every pet will have different dietary requirements, abilities, and mood sets. It’ll be your responsibility, as its newfound keeper, to keep on top of these three things and level them accordingly while also working on your own progression. Sounds relatively easy, no? Well, it has its pros and cons.

It goes without saying that, having a pet is like having a second pair of hands — it’s going to grant you an immediate advantage in battle. What’s more, as pets tend to draw the lion’s share of the attention, more often than not, you’ll find that you’re free to rain arrows down on your targets from afar without the risk of onboarding any unnecessary damage. Just note that, if you’re not keeping on top of your pet’s basic needs outside of combat, then you’ll come to notice that their standard passive, defensive, and aggressive abilities won’t be anywhere near as effective.

To stay on top of your pet’s needs, you’re going to need to feed them. Now, depending on the pet you’ve chosen to tame, it could be that a good old-fashioned filet steak is enough to sow their appetites. But that’s not all, as you’ll also need to aid them when they’re wounded, and accrue training points to help strengthen their weaknesses. If you can earn your pet’s trust, then you’ll eventually earn Loyalty, which will essentially tighten the bond, and ultimately make combat situations a whole lot easier to overcome.

4. Know Your Position

Given the fact that you’ve chosen the Hunter class to pursue, you’re probably already familiar with the duties that it holds. If not, then you’ll need to know that such a class is best suited for ranged combat, and preferably not anything that involves standing on the frontline and in the thick of the action. It’s a support class, is what we’re saying, which means Hunters, really, shouldn’t ever aim to be the center of attention during combat — even if it’s in a Raid or Dungeon.

Think of the Hunter class as the middle layer on a three-tier prism; its purpose is to provide additional ranged support for the frontline, but also serve as a line of defense for Healers and other support classes that occupy the outer tier. In other words, Hunters are  not Tanks, and so anyone who’s rolling as one should understand what their position is before joining a Guild or Dungeon/Raid party. If you can get the gist of your position and your duties, then you won’t have to worry about any potential technical or formation hiccups later down the line.

3. Don’t Neglect Your Armor

Although most of your fights will be approached from a distance, it doesn’t mean you’ll never have to confront your enemies — especially with groups of mobs that flock to your position without forewarning. To tackle these situations, you’re going to need some sturdy armor—a set that’s high in both agility and stamina, as these are the two primary nodes that will allow you to deal with your targets both swiftly and effectively. Anything else, such as the critical hit, for example, will serve as ideal stat boosters, and will increase your attack power, in general.

While there are some pretty fantastic cloth and leather armor options available in World of Warcraft, you’ll find that the best wears with the higher stat boosts often fall within the chain mail category. As Hunters are able to equip any of the three types, it’s often best to opt for the chain mail attires, as these will have higher durability than most cloth and leather sets, and will, at least cosmetically, appear a lot cleaner overall. So, if you’re looking to get your hands on a good suit of armor, always be sure to check out the stats; if they don’t suit the Hunter class, then steer well clear of them.

2. Master the Aspects

One of the exclusive perks of being a Hunter is the ability to learn Aspects, which serve as self-buffs to help boost your stats for all the while one of them is active. For example, if you learn Aspect of the Cheetah, then you’ll have the ability to increase your movement speed by 90%, which can of course make sticky situations a little easier easier to slip out of. And that doesn’t just apply to one Aspect, either, but each and every one of them.

Once you’ve managed to remove the training wheels and learn a few worthwhile Aspects, you’ll want to hardwire their perks into your subconscious, and not to mention your hotbar, which will in turn make it easier to alternate between buffs during combat and other world activities. As you’ll be the one with exclusive access to these temporary stat boosts, you’ll want to use them as often as possible, and if applicable, on your party members during Raids or Dungeons. Note that certain Aspects can only be used by a Hunter, meaning not all buffs will apply to other class types.

1. Take Advantage of Your Abilities

As Hunters, you’ll have access to a variation of traps and additional abilities. Traps, for example, can be a perfect way to lure rare enemies out to open areas, as well as quest-related bosses and what have you. If possible, always scope out an area before engaging in battle — especially if you’re facing off against a higher-level enemy. Chances are, your health will be significantly lower than that of your opponent’s — so preparation is vital in most, if not all cases.

An ability worth keeping slotted in your hotbar is the Feign Death command, an impromptu action that allows you to drop dead and immediately distract your oppressor. If you’re cutting a little too close to the edge and your odds are beginning to decrease, utilize this command and retreat to a safe distance to rethink your strategy. Fact is, taking a quick loss and redeploying your assets is much quicker than having to make the long hike back from the graveyard.

31 years ago, or so, I remember vividly being told I had to go to bed and that the adults (and my older cousins) were going to play a serious game of bridge. I had a temper tantrum and stormed off to my room crying.

I was five years old, and couldn’t fathom why I wasn’t allowed to stay up, while my seven and nine-year-old cousins were allowed to join the adults at the card table. Despite my young age and struggling to hold on to all 13 cards, I had been learning the rules of bridge and had already had a knack for card games.

Over time, I earned a reputation within the family as one of the more aggressive players. Growing up, playing bridge for countless hours during each summer and competing in national chess tournaments played a significant role in shaping my childhood identity.

When playing bridge, I found myself just as intrigued, if not more so, by observing how my opponents played and their unique style, rather than focusing solely on the conventional theories of the game. While reading books on bridge theory tended to bore me, I never grew tired of discussing potential moves with my teammates or opponents.

I constantly sought to understand their perspectives and reasoning, always curious about what approach they would have taken in certain situations. For instance, I would often ponder why aunt Laura didn’t choose the finesse option when an aggressive move was necessary.

When I discovered poker years later, this psychological curiosity played into the way I approached the game. I’ve always been fascinated by outliers of the game, players who are impossibly tight, or impossibly loose – those with seemingly total disregard for positional awareness, and those whose extreme caution has likely been formed by factors that existed in their lives before they even learned how to play cards.

I always tried to understand and assess a person first, from the perspective of their humanity, and then figure out how that “character type” would play cards.

The Growth of The game

Several factors have contributed to the recent surge in popularity of live poker in recent years. The first notable factor is the sense of boredom that many experienced during the Covid-19 pandemic. Additionally, the emergence of poker streamers and the availability of high-stakes streamed games have captured the attention of enthusiasts.

For many nonprofessionals, they don’t expect to win long-term, and one of their primary objectives is to have a good time.

How I succeed Incorporating Psychology in Poker

The core enjoyment lies in participating in games where players are not only engaged in the gameplay but also actively fostering a social atmosphere filled with laughter and camaraderie. Irrespective of my financial investment in the game, I find great satisfaction in the sheer act of being sociable.

Additionally, from a strategic perspective, the biggest reason I enjoy these sorts of games is that it allows me to harness and grow what I consider to be the strongest part of my game – my psychological understanding, and my ability to adjust to different opponent types.

Through engaging my opponents in conversation about their everyday lives, pushing their limits with consecutive 3bets, and employing a range of bet sizing techniques such as under-betting and over-betting, as well as showcasing both bluffs and strong hands, I can effectively extract valuable information from their reactions.

I’ve always been open to revealing a lot about my own playing style during a hand, placing trust in my ability to swiftly counter-adjust or utilize the acquired information to my advantage.

Life Lessons From the Poker Table

I understand and respect that some pros won’t feel this way, and they have the right to play their own way and conduct themselves at the table. But while I personally hate the politics of private games, I also understand the reason live cash has gone that direction, as if I were a losing player, I’d want to at least be enjoying myself with the crowd I’m with.

Leaning into the psychological aspect of the game and realizing the edges that can be gleaned simply by understanding your opponents’ personalities better can serve the purposes of both improving your win rate and making the environment at the table more fun for everyone.

As someone who grew up immersed in card games, I developed a fascination for the unique styles and approaches of fellow players. This curiosity carried over to poker, where I discovered the significance of understanding opponents on a deeper level. I firmly believe that fostering a fun and engaging environment can contribute to the long-term growth and enjoyment of poker.

Reported incidents of these sorts of monsters vary somewhat, but there are several basic characteristics that pop up over and over again. In most cases, the eyewitnesses describe a beast that is 4.5 to 5.5 feet (137 to 168 cm) tall, with an oval-shaped head bearing glowing eyes with an alien-like shape. Most descriptions claim that the creature has long, sharp spines that run from the back of its head down the spine, ending at the rump.

Many eyewitnesses report a strong, unpleasant, sulfur-type odor, but others say that the creature has no smell. Some say the skin is similar to a frog’s — green in color with mottled specks; others claim that it has the appearance of furry lizard with scaly skin.

Although the bipedal creature generally ambles on two legs, it has been known to run on all four. Many assert kangaroo-like qualities, saying that the Chupacabra uses its strong hind legs to jump rather than walk. Others suggest a more ape-like quality to the creature’s gait.

The origins of the Chupacabra are a subject of debate, as well. Some people believe that this creature is the left-behind pet of visitors from outer space — hence their uncanny resemblance to space aliens known as “grays.” Both reportedly have large, oval heads with enormous eyes.

The alien theory doesn’t end there, however. Others speculate an alien-animal crossbreed created by scientists at NASA, suggesting that the creatures are escaped experiments gone awry. One veterinarian in South America believes that the Chupacabra is a genetically modified vampire bat. Other medical and official personnel suspect that these incidents are caused by packs of wild dogs.

Whatever the case, it’s interesting to witness people’s reactions to phenomena like this. People are particularly interested in the Chupacabra for the same reason they are fascinated by humanoid extraterrestrials: We are drawn to the idea of human-like creatures, with human-like intelligence, because it means that we are not alone in the universe.

They lost in 1990 to the Detroit Pistons and in 1992 to the notorious Chicago Bulls. Midseason in 1994/95, he switched to the champion Houston Rockets, and it was the third time lucky for Drexler as Houston won a second title in a row. The ten-time All-Star also won Olympic Gold as part of the 1992 Dream Team.

Olympic champion in 2000, Allen retired in 2014 with 24,505 points to his name, undoubtedly one of the best shooting guards to grace the NBA.

8. REGGIE MILLER

Perhaps the ultimate one-club man, it is nearly impossible to talk about the Indiana Pacers without mentioning their greatest son, Reggie Miller. With Miller in the team, the Pacers reached the playoffs 15 times and reached the Eastern Conference Final on six occasions, winning just once, in 2000, when they were defeated by the Los Angeles Lakers in their only Finals appearance to date. None of which would have been possible without Miller, who scored over 25,000 points, almost double the second-highest scoring Pacer. Reggie Miller is unquestionably one of the best pro basketball players of all time never to win a ring.

7. GEORGE GERVIN

Known as the Iceman, George Gervin was a star in the American Basketball Association before joining the Spurs in the NBA in the mid-1970s. He was San Antonio’s key player as they transitioned to life in the NBA, with his number 44 retired by the Texan franchise. He averaged over 25 points per game, and prior to Michael Jordan’s career, Gervin held the most scoring titles of any shooting guard in NBA history.

For many, the finest South American to ever grace a court, Manu Ginobili was as integral to the trifecta he formed with Tim Duncan and Tony Parker as the other two were. Playing in Italy after leaving his native country of Argentina, Ginobili was drafted by the Spurs in 1999 and made his debut in 2002, winning the first of four titles in his first season. An Olympic Gold medallist in 2004 and Euroleague champion, he stayed at the Spurs for his entire NBA career. San Antonio retired his number 20 in 2018.

The fifth overall pick in the 2003 draft, Dwyane Wade went on to spend 14 years in total with the Miami Heat, retiring in 2019 with his number 3 jersey hung up for good. He also won a ring in 2006, when Wade was named the Finals MVP in what was the Florida franchise’s first championship. He was also the league-scoring champion in 2009 and an Olympic Gold medalist in 2008.

We picked Reggie Miller as the ultimate one-team player because it is harder to stick around with a team when you aren’t winning championships. That said, we should take nothing away from the incredible 20 years Kobe Bryant spent with the Los Angeles Lakers, in which he was a champion in a quarter of those years. 18 times an All-Star, the Black Mamba, with his famous Mamba Mentality and beautiful fadeaways, averaged 25 points per game, is currently fourth in the all-time NBA scorers list and is considered by some to be the best basketball player of all-time. All corners of the globe mourned his tragic death in a helicopter crash in 2020.
